A Brief History
In its early years, the founding members of Bethlehem Lutheran belonged to the St. Johannes Lutheran church, a congregation in the Nebraska Synod located at the intersection of Highway 15 and 148. When their pastor accepted another call the congregation was unable to call another pastor and a choice had to be made. The elders of the congregation contacted Pastor C.F. Lehenbauer, then President of the Kansas District LCMS and pastor of Zion Lutheran - Linn, to help establish a new LCMS congregation.
On January 17, 1917 the constitution for Bethlehem Lutheran Church was adopted and the new congregation was established on a four acre plot southwest of Greenleaf donated by some of the founding members on July 15, 1917. The members who remained at St. Johannes would eventually merge with Trinity Lutheran in Greenleaf. In 1919 Bethlehem opened a parochial school and it remained open until 1949 when the pastor accepted another call. Yet education was still a vital part of the congregation and in 1952 a Saturday school was organized for religious instruction; today this continues in our Midweek Classes on Wednesday evening.
Since 1917 Bethlehem Lutheran has boldly confessed the Gospel of Christ Jesus in word and deed, in times of difficulty and in times of plenty. The Lord has blessed our work in this community, and there are several things with which our congregation continues to be involved with including our LWML (Lutheran Women's Missionary League), our LLL (Lutheran Laymen's League), our Midweek education for 3rd-6th grade youth, and Catechism Instruction for our 6th-8th grade youth, LYF (Lutheran Youth Fellowship) for post-confirmation age youth, Sunday School and Adult Bible Class on Sunday mornings following Divine Service, and several meals and community events throughout the year.
